Prescribing considerations
- Confirm indication and product-specific licence; selected products are for weight management and are not a substitute for insulin.
- Review previous pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, gastrointestinal motility disorders, renal or hepatic impairment and advanced heart failure.
- Avoid concurrent GLP-1 receptor agonists and review hypoglycaemia risk with insulin or sulfonylureas.
- Consider residual gastric contents before general anaesthesia or deep sedation.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to liraglutide or any product excipient.
Monitoring
- Body weight and BMI response against product-specific continuation criteria.
- Blood glucose where diabetes or hypoglycaemia-risk medicines are present.
- Hydration and renal function if substantial vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
- Resting heart rate and symptoms of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease.
Clinical pharmacology
Liraglutide is an acylated GLP-1 analogue with prolonged activity through albumin binding and resistance to rapid enzymatic breakdown. It affects appetite, glucose-dependent insulin and glucagon secretion, and gastric emptying.
Formulation and product differences
- Nevolat and Plaobes are clear subcutaneous solutions in disposable multidose pre-filled pens; compatible disposable needles are not included.
- Excipient buffers differ between selected products; consult the individual SmPC when excipient sensitivity or device compatibility matters.
