Prescribing considerations

• Confirm that the lesion and selected product’s licensed indication match.
• Assess lesion site and extent, surrounding skin integrity, diabetes, peripheral circulation and neuropathy.
• Review pregnancy and breastfeeding status because recommendations differ between products.
• For Duofilm, avoid use in children or teenagers during or immediately after a viral illness.

Contraindications and cautions

• Hypersensitivity to an active ingredient or excipient
• Face, anogenital region, mucous membranes, moles, birthmarks, or hairy or otherwise atypical lesions
• Open, infected, irritated or reddened skin where specified
• Bazuka Treatment Gel and Salactol: diabetes or impaired peripheral circulation
• Duofilm: diabetes, circulatory problems or peripheral neuropathy require medical supervision

Monitoring

• Check for persistent pain, inflammation, blistering or damage to surrounding skin.
• Reconsider diagnosis or management if the lesion persists or is atypical.
• Avoid treating extensive areas; Duofilm identifies a potential salicylate-toxicity risk with larger treated areas.

Clinical pharmacology

Both acids are locally keratolytic. Salicylic acid promotes shedding of the stratum corneum; lactic acid reduces hyperkeratosis and supports salicylic-acid release from the film-forming vehicle. Systemic absorption from small, circumscribed areas is expected to be low.

Formulation and product differences

• Bazuka Treatment Gel is a precisely applied, film-forming gel licensed for warts, verrucas, corns and calluses.
• Salactol is an evaporative collodion paint licensed for warts, verrucas, corns and calluses and contains colophony.
• Duofilm is a topical solution licensed for warts; it contains colophony and ethanol and has specific cautions concerning viral illness, other topical medicines and lactation.
