How does iobenguane work?
Iobenguane resembles noradrenaline and is taken up by sympathetic nerve endings and neural-crest-derived cells. Its iodine-123 emits gamma radiation that a scanner detects, showing where the tracer has accumulated.
How to take iobenguane
It is administered slowly into a vein in a designated nuclear medicine setting. Follow the department’s instructions about medicines, thyroid protection and radiation precautions.
Give the department a complete list of prescribed, non-prescribed and recreational substances.
Keep well hydrated before and after the examination unless told otherwise.
Empty your bladder regularly after the injection to reduce radiation exposure.
