Prescribing considerations
- Confirm the intended route and formulation because the cream and solution have different licensed uses.
- Restrict use to superficial areas. Do not introduce hydrogen peroxide into closed cavities or use it on deep or large wounds because oxygen generation can cause gas embolism.
- Reassess persistent or worsening infection and consider microbiological investigation or alternative treatment.
- Consider irritant excipients in the cream, including propylene glycol and salicylic acid.

Clinical pharmacology
Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidising antiseptic. Catalase and peroxidases rapidly convert it to water and oxygen; local reactive oxygen species damage microbial lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. The lipid-stabilised cream prolonged local availability compared with an unstabilised aqueous preparation in in-vitro testing.
Formulation and product differences
- Crystacide is a lipid-stabilised cream licensed for susceptible superficial skin infections; it forms a washable dry film.
- The aqueous solution was licensed for mild skin disinfection and oral topical use as a mouthwash or gargle but is listed as discontinued.
- The cream contains propylene glycol and salicylic acid, which may irritate skin.
- Once opened, the cream has a limited in-use shelf life; follow package storage and discard instructions.
