Prescribing considerations

• Confirm that symptoms are suitable for local symptomatic treatment and assess persistent, severe or recurrent sore throat.
• Review excipients in people with wheat allergy, sulphite sensitivity, carbohydrate intolerance or previous reactions to colourings or fragrances.

Contraindications and cautions

• Hypersensitivity to hexylresorcinol or another ingredient

Clinical pharmacology

Hexylresorcinol is a topical local anaesthetic for oral and pharyngeal mucosa with mild antiseptic activity. The lozenge base also has a demulcent effect.

Formulation and product differences

• The selected product is a round, purple, blackcurrant-flavoured lozenge.
• It contains glucose and sucrose. Its wheat-starch-derived glucose has only very low gluten levels, but wheat allergy remains relevant.
• It contains sulphur dioxide, carmoisine, d-limonene and linalool, which may cause hypersensitivity reactions.
• Similarly branded throat lozenges may contain other active ingredients, so verify the pack.
