hexetidine: clinical use

Prescribing considerations

• Confirm that symptoms are suitable for local self-care; persistent or atypical lesions require assessment.
• The selected product is not recommended for children under 12 years.
• Ensure the patient can rinse or gargle safely without swallowing.
• It contains ethanol and azorubine, which may cause allergic reactions.

Contraindications and cautions

• Hypersensitivity to hexetidine or any excipient.

Monitoring

• Clinical response and persistence or recurrence of symptoms.
• Local irritation, altered taste, discolouration, ulceration or hypersensitivity.
• Assess a mouth ulcer lasting longer than three weeks or a sore throat that fails to improve.

Clinical pharmacology

Hexetidine is a locally acting broad-spectrum oral antimicrobial. Human absorption studies after topical use are unavailable; systemic exposure is predicted to be negligible, while retention on oral tissues and plaque has been demonstrated.

Formulation and product differences

• The selected product is a clear red mouthwash containing ethanol, azorubine, levomenthol and eucalyptus oil.
• It is essentially sodium-free and intended for undiluted oromucosal use.
• Protect from light, store below 30°C and use within six months after opening.
