Prescribing considerations
- Restricted to hospital use by appropriately trained and qualified ophthalmic surgeons.
- Confirm adequate undamaged limbus for biopsy and correct active ocular inflammation or infection before proceeding.
- Optimise eyelid malposition, conjunctival scarring, severe ocular surface sensory loss, pterygium and severe dry eye before implantation.
- Manufacture may fail because cells do not expand or release criteria are not met; plan an alternative management pathway.
- Exclude, anticipate or defer other ocular surgery to support engraftment.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to an excipient, bovine serum or murine 3T3-J2 cells.
- Administration to anyone other than the patient whose biopsy was used.
- Product or documentation that does not match the intended patient.
Monitoring
- Assess epithelial healing, engraftment, inflammation and corneal neovascularisation.
- Monitor for infection, persistent epithelial defects, ulcerative keratitis, corneal thinning and perforation.
- Monitor intraocular pressure during associated corticosteroid treatment.
- Maintain long-term product, batch and patient traceability.
Clinical pharmacology
Locally implanted autologous epithelial and limbal stem cells differentiate and migrate to regenerate the corneal epithelium while establishing a renewing stem-cell reservoir. Conventional systemic pharmacokinetic assessment is not applicable.
Formulation and product differences
- A transparent, circular living-tissue sheet of viable autologous corneal epithelial cells attached to a fibrin support and held in transport medium.
- Individually manufactured for one identified patient and supplied for surgical implantation rather than topical administration.

Formal interaction studies have not been performed. Some topical products can harm implanted cells or reduce their growth.
Eye drops containing benzalkonium chloride or other preservatives
Can damage exposed corneal epithelial cells and should be avoided around implantation.
Topical lidocaine
Can reduce colony-forming ability and must not be used during the treatment process.
Anaesthetics containing adrenaline
Can reduce colony-forming efficiency and must be avoided.
