How does erythromycin lactobionate work?
It binds to the bacterial 50S ribosomal subunit and suppresses protein production. This stops susceptible bacteria growing and, in some circumstances, kills them.

How to take erythromycin lactobionate

Erythromycin can be used during pregnancy when recommended by a doctor, and treating infection is important. Because observational findings are conflicting, intravenous use should follow an individual assessment of clinical need and alternatives.

Intravenous erythromycin can be used during breastfeeding with precautionary infant monitoring when the infant is full-term and healthy. Seek specialist advice for a premature or unwell infant. Monitor for diarrhoea, vomiting, oral thrush, rash, unusual sleepiness, irritability or poor feeding.

Simvastatin, atorvastatin or lovastatin

Ergotamine or dihydroergotamine
The combination is contraindicated because increased ergot exposure can cause severe vasospasm and tissue ischaemia.
QT-prolonging medicines
Combined effects can increase the risk of torsades de pointes and other dangerous ventricular arrhythmias; several combinations are contraindicated.
