Prescribing considerations
- Licensed for seasonal allergic conjunctivitis in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over.
- For topical ophthalmic use only.
- Benzalkonium chloride may irritate dry eyes, disrupt the tear film and affect a compromised corneal surface.
- Phosphate-containing drops have very rarely been associated with corneal calcification in patients with substantially damaged corneas.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to epinastine hydrochloride or any excipient.
Monitoring
- Review persistent or worsening symptoms and reconsider the diagnosis.
- Monitor the ocular surface during prolonged use, particularly with dry eye or corneal compromise.
- Assess eye pain, significant swelling or visual disturbance promptly.
Clinical pharmacology
Epinastine is a direct H1-receptor antagonist with mast-cell-stabilising and inflammatory-cell-modulating activity. Ocular administration produces extremely low systemic concentrations; metabolism is minimal and absorbed epinastine is mainly excreted unchanged by the kidneys.
Formulation and product differences
- The selected product is a clear, colourless, sterile multidose eye-drop solution.
- It contains benzalkonium chloride as a preservative and phosphate excipients.
- Discard the bottle four weeks after first opening.

Strengths: 0.5 mg/mL
epinastine hydrochloride interactions
Formal interaction studies have not been performed. Clinically important systemic interactions are not expected because blood concentrations after eye application are extremely low.
Other eye drops or ointments
Do not apply different eye treatments simultaneously; separate their application as instructed.
Soft contact lenses
Benzalkonium chloride can be absorbed by soft lenses and may discolour them. Remove lenses before use and replace them after 15 minutes.
