Prescribing considerations
- Confirm deficiency associated with a licensed malabsorption disorder rather than routine nutritional supplementation.
- Review anticoagulant use, vitamin K deficiency, previous thrombosis, oestrogen exposure and planned surgery.
- Consider excipient risks in neonates and low-birth-weight premature infants.

Clinical pharmacology
A synthetic, fat-soluble vitamin E ester. After gastrointestinal absorption, vitamin E is transported mainly through lymph, distributed widely and acts principally as a lipid-phase antioxidant. Elimination occurs mainly through bile, with urinary excretion of metabolites.
Formulation and product differences
- The selected raspberry-flavoured oral suspension contains sucrose, benzoic acid, propylene glycol and polyoxyl castor oil.
- Sucrose is relevant to hereditary sugar disorders and dental exposure.
- Benzoic acid may worsen jaundice in newborns; propylene glycol requires particular caution in young neonates; polyoxyl castor oil may cause gastrointestinal upset.
- If diluted with Syrup BP, use immediately rather than storing.

Tell the prescriber or pharmacist about medicines and supplements because vitamin E may affect bleeding, absorption or treatment response.
Anticoagulants, including warfarin
Vitamin E may increase bleeding risk, so clotting tests and anticoagulant treatment may need review.
Colestyramine
May reduce vitamin E absorption; blood levels may need monitoring in cholestasis.
Oestrogens, including combined oral contraceptives
A possible increased thrombosis risk has been reported but not confirmed; individual risk factors should be considered.
