How does diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (acellular), hib vaccine and poliomyelitis work?
It contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, purified acellular pertussis antigens, inactivated polioviruses and Hib polysaccharide joined to a carrier protein. These cannot cause the target infections but train the immune system to produce antibodies and immune memory.
How to take diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (acellular), hib vaccine and poliomyelitis
A trained healthcare professional reconstitutes the Hib powder with the vaccine suspension and injects it deep into a thigh muscle. It must not be injected into a blood vessel. Other injectable vaccines may be given at the same visit at different sites.
Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, fever, neurological illness, immune suppression or bleeding disorders.
Food does not affect administration.
A child with a bleeding tendency may need firm pressure without rubbing after injection.

Common or expected effects
- Injection-site pain, redness, swelling or firmness
- Fever
- Irritability, restlessness or unusual crying
- Sleepiness and reduced appetite
- Vomiting or diarrhoea

- Severe allergic reaction, including breathing difficulty or facial or throat swelling
- Collapse or a shock-like episode
- Convulsion, with or without fever
- Pauses in breathing, particularly in very premature infants
- Marked swelling affecting the whole injected limb

This paediatric product has no product-specific pregnancy safety information. Although inactivated vaccines and toxoids can be used during pregnancy when indicated, pregnant people should receive the vaccine recommended for their circumstances.
