How does desmopressin acetate work?
Desmopressin mimics arginine vasopressin at the kidneys, increasing water reabsorption and producing less, more concentrated urine. It has much less vasopressor activity than natural vasopressin. It can also release factor VIII and von Willebrand factor from body stores.

How to take desmopressin acetate
Use only the prescribed formulation and follow its specific fluid instructions. Formulations have different absorption and administration requirements.
Allow sublingual tablets or oral lyophilisates to dissolve under the tongue; water is not required.
Peel back the blister foil rather than pushing fragile sublingual products through it.
Measure oral solution with the supplied oral syringe.
Food can reduce absorption, so use oral or sublingual products consistently in relation to meals as directed.
Injection requires healthcare-professional administration or specialist training.

desmopressin acetate in pregnancy
Human data are limited but have not established an increased overall malformation risk. The prescriber should review treatment and monitor blood pressure because of concern about pre-eclampsia. Essential diabetes-insipidus treatment should not be stopped without specialist advice.

Only very small amounts are expected to enter breast milk, below those expected to affect the infant's urine production. Product wording differs: some formulations state that breastfeeding need not stop, while another recommends an individual decision balancing benefits.
