crotamiton: clinical details
Prescribing considerations
- Confirm the cause of itch where symptoms are severe, widespread, recurrent or associated with pregnancy.
- Use only under medical supervision in children younger than three years and for genital itching.
- Counsel about eye and mucosal avoidance, skin integrity and the serious fabric fire hazard.
- For suspected scabies, address household or close contacts and environmental measures to reduce reinfestation.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to crotamiton or any excipient
- Acute exudative dermatoses
Monitoring
- Review local tolerability and stop treatment if severe irritation occurs.
- Assess for contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity if rash, erythema or eczema worsens.
- Persistent itch after scabies treatment can continue for several weeks; reassess if symptoms remain or new burrows appear.
Clinical pharmacology
Crotamiton is a topical antipruritic and acaricide. It penetrates human skin, producing low but measurable plasma concentrations, and acts on the scabies mite motor system to stop spontaneous movement.
Formulation and product differences
- The selected product is a white-to-cream coloured topical cream.
- It contains stearyl alcohol, methyl hydroxybenzoate, sodium lauryl sulphate and fragrance allergens that can cause local or delayed allergic reactions.
- This is crotamiton alone; combination products containing a corticosteroid have different indications and precautions.
crotamiton interactions
No formal interaction studies have been performed.
Other products applied to the same skin area
The cream’s sodium lauryl sulphate may increase local reactions caused by another product. Check concurrent topical treatment with a pharmacist or prescriber.
