Chikungunya virus (chikv) virus-like particles (vlp) adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide, hydrated: clinical use

Prescribing considerations

• Base use on the licensed indication and current official recommendations after individual travel or occupational risk assessment.
• Continue mosquito-bite precautions because an immune response may not occur in every recipient.
• Postpone during acute severe febrile illness or acute infection; minor infection or low-grade fever need not delay vaccination.
• Safety and efficacy have not been assessed in immunodeficiency or during systemic immunosuppressive therapy.
• Take precautions against injury in people prone to injection-related syncope.

Contraindications and cautions

• Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipient.
• Use caution with anticoagulant therapy, thrombocytopenia, haemophilia or another coagulation disorder because intramuscular injection may cause bleeding or bruising.

Monitoring

• Ensure treatment for immediate anaphylaxis is readily available.
• Record the product name and batch number for traceability.
• Report suspected adverse reactions through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme; the product is under additional monitoring.

Clinical pharmacology

An aluminium-adjuvanted recombinant VLP vaccine containing chikungunya capsid and envelope proteins. The particles do not infect cells or replicate; they induce neutralising antibodies. Clinical benefit was inferred using an antibody-response surrogate rather than direct efficacy outcomes.

Formulation and product differences

• Supplied as a suspension in a single-use pre-filled syringe without a needle.
• Before shaking it is clear with a white precipitate; after vigorous shaking it should be a homogeneous white, cloudy suspension without foreign particles.
• Do not mix with another medicinal product or vaccine in the same syringe or vial.
• Store refrigerated, protect from light and do not freeze.
