Prescribing considerations
- Confirm that the formulation is licensed for the indication and age group; adult-strength gel is unsuitable for teething.
- For teething, recommend non-pharmacological measures first and provide pharmacist guidance.
- Avoid concurrent lidocaine products and consider medicines that increase lidocaine exposure or cardiac effects.
- Use cautiously on wounded or traumatised mucosa because systemic absorption may increase.

Monitoring

Clinical pharmacology
Lidocaine reversibly inhibits nerve-impulse generation and transmission. It is absorbed across oral mucosa, especially when damaged, and undergoes extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism. Chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium chloride act locally as antiseptics.
Formulation and product differences
- Liquid contains menthol and is licensed for mouth ulcers, denture irritation and selected teething use.
- Teething gel is licensed from 5 months for teething after non-medicine measures fail, and for mouth ulcers and denture irritation.
- Adult-strength gel has a higher lidocaine concentration, is restricted to people aged 12 years and over, and is unsuitable for teething.
- Both gels contain clove oil; all three selected formulations contain ethanol.
