Prescribing considerations
- Confirm that symptoms are consistent with dry eye and investigate persistent, worsening or atypical symptoms.
- Account for transient visual blurring when counselling about driving and safety-critical work.
- Consider a preservative-free formulation where the ocular surface is compromised or preservatives are poorly tolerated.
- Check contact-lens compatibility and the instructions for the selected formulation.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to carbomer or any formulation excipient.
- Liquivisc contains benzalkonium chloride, requiring caution in dry-eye patients and people with a compromised cornea.
Monitoring
- No routine systemic monitoring is described.
- With prolonged preserved-product use, review the ocular surface, particularly when the cornea is compromised.
- Reassess promptly if pain, persistent redness, irritation, visual change or worsening symptoms develop.
Clinical pharmacology
Carbomer is a hydrophilic, high-molecular-weight polymer acting locally as a tear substitute. It forms a lubricating film over the cornea and conjunctiva; systemic exposure is expected to be negligible.
Formulation and product differences
- Liquivisc is a multidose carbomer 974P gel containing benzalkonium chloride.
- Viscotears Single Dose Unit is preservative-free and must be used immediately after opening, then discarded.

Other ophthalmic medicines, including glaucoma treatments
Do not apply them simultaneously. Separate applications according to the product instructions and use carbomer gel last to avoid interfering with the other medicine.
