Short-term replacement of circulating volume in hypovolaemia or hypotension, alone or with a colloid.
Regulating acid–base balance or treating mild to moderate metabolic acidosis, excluding lactic acidosis.
How does calcium chloride dihydrate + potassium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium lactate work?
Its electrolytes resemble those in extracellular fluid, so the infusion expands fluid within blood vessels and tissues while supplying sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride. Lactate is metabolised mainly in the liver to generate bicarbonate, producing an alkalinising effect.
How to take calcium chloride dihydrate + potassium chloride + sodium chloride + sodium lactate
It is administered into a vein by trained healthcare professionals. The bag and solution must be checked before use and not used if the container is damaged, the solution is discoloured or particles are visible.
Tell the clinical team about heart, kidney or liver disease, swelling, electrolyte problems and all current medicines.
Report pain, burning, redness or swelling around the infusion site promptly.
Medicines should be added only after compatibility has been checked for the specific product.

Common or expected effects
- Itching or rash
- Chest tightness or discomfort with a faster or slower heartbeat
- Anxiety
- Pain, redness, burning, swelling or inflammation at the infusion site
- Fluid or electrolyte disturbances, particularly in susceptible patients
Get urgent medical advice
- Severe infusion reaction, including breathing difficulty, bronchospasm, widespread hives or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- Acute hyponatraemia causing headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion, lethargy or seizures
- Fluid overload or pulmonary oedema causing worsening swelling or breathlessness
- Serious potassium, calcium or acid–base disturbance causing marked weakness, paralysis, muscle spasms or an abnormal heartbeat
- Extravasation, severe phlebitis or suspected infection around the infusion site

It may be used during pregnancy when clinically needed and fluid and electrolyte balance is monitored. Particular caution is required during labour with oxytocin because of the risk of hyponatraemia. Any added medicine requires its own pregnancy assessment.

It may be used while breastfeeding when fluid and electrolyte balance is controlled. Calcium enters breast milk, and any added medicine must be assessed separately.

Important interactions and incompatibilities include:
Ceftriaxone
It must not be mixed with this calcium-containing solution. Newborns aged 28 days or younger must not receive both even through separate lines; older patients require separate or thoroughly flushed lines.
Digoxin and other digitalis glycosides
Calcium can enhance digitalis effects and provoke serious or fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Concomitant use is contraindicated in the selected products.
Potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin-II receptor blockers, tacrolimus and ciclosporin
