How does Abaloparatide work?
Abaloparatide activates the PTH1 receptor, stimulating cells that form new bone and increasing bone density.
How to take Abaloparatide
Use the pre-filled pen exactly as demonstrated by a healthcare professional.
Inject under the skin of the lower abdomen, avoiding the area immediately around the navel.
Rotate abdominal injection sites.
Initial administration should be supervised by a healthcare professional.
Use a new sterile needle for every injection and remove it afterwards; needles are not supplied with the pen.
Do not share the pen, even if the needle has been changed.
Only use solution that is clear, colourless and free from particles.
Abaloparatide side effects
Common or expected effects
- Dizziness or headache
- Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea
- Back, joint, bone or limb pain and muscle spasms
- Palpitations or a faster heartbeat
- Injection-site reactions
- Raised blood or urine calcium
- Fatigue, weakness or malaise
- Rash or itching
- Kidney stones
Get urgent medical advice
- Severe allergic reaction, including facial or throat swelling and breathing difficulty
- Fainting or severe symptoms from a fall in blood pressure
- Severe or persistent cardiovascular symptoms
- Marked weakness, confusion or persistent vomiting that could indicate significantly raised calcium
Abaloparatide in pregnancy
Eladynos is contraindicated during pregnancy and is not indicated for women who could become pregnant. Anyone who may be pregnant should contact their prescriber promptly.
Abaloparatide while breastfeeding
Eladynos is contraindicated while breastfeeding. It is unknown whether abaloparatide enters human milk, and a risk to the infant cannot be excluded.
Abaloparatide interactions
Dedicated interaction studies have not been performed, although overall interaction potential is considered low. Important examples include:
Digoxin or other digitalis medicines
Raised calcium may increase susceptibility to digitalis toxicity; specialist caution is required.
Blood-pressure-lowering or other vasoactive medicines
The combination may worsen dizziness or a fall in blood pressure on standing.
