Voriconazole inhibits fungal cytochrome P450-mediated 14 alpha-lanosterol demethylation, an essential step in ergosterol production; the resulting accumulation of 14 alpha-methyl sterols and loss of ergosterol from fungal cell membranes may explain its antifungal activity.
