UpToDate vs UpToDate Expert AI: What the Names and Plans Mean in 2026

Featured image for UpToDate vs UpToDate Expert AI: What the Names and Plans Mean in 2026

UpToDate is the clinical reference and wider product family. UpToDate Expert AI is its conversational generative AI experience. UpToDate Pro Plus is a subscription package with additional tools. These names describe different parts of the offer, so comparing them as three competing products can lead to the wrong purchase.

There is also a useful change for readers who remember the original launch: Wolters Kluwer now says Expert AI is included in personal UpToDate subscriptions in the United States. Its current renewal page separates that inclusion from the additional features sold through Pro Plus. Canadian personal plans and institutional access need their own checks.

This guide maps the names and entitlements using public product pages checked on 5 November 2026. It is iatroX editorial analysis, with a commercial interest in iatroX.

The names describe content, interfaces and packages

Wolters Kluwer’s professional product navigation places UpToDate with Expert AI and Pro Plus within its Pro range, alongside separate Lexidrug products. The navigation is a useful starting map; the selected subscription determines the entitlement.

If you searched for UpToDate AI, look for Expert AI

The current named conversational product is UpToDate Expert AI. Its documented features include follow-up questions, stated assumptions, links to supporting UpToDate passages, clinical tables and relevant drug information. These let a reader move between a focused answer and the underlying reference.

Older references to AI Labs describe the development programme. Wolters Kluwer’s December 2025 rollout presentation dates the launch of Generative AI Labs to October 2023, an AI-powered Enterprise search enhancement to October 2024, and the Expert AI launch to 2025.

That history matters when reading an older review. Natural-language search that retrieves a passage, an experimental service and a conversational answer experience are different capabilities. An old screenshot labelled UpToDate AI cannot establish what a current subscription includes.

Does Expert AI still require Pro Plus?

For US personal subscriptions, the current official renewal page says Expert AI is now included. It then presents Pro Plus as an upgrade for additional tools. The professional store page also lists Expert AI within the standard package.

The renewal page is unusually helpful because it states the scopes separately: professional subscriptions in the United States, and personal trainee subscriptions in the United States and Canada. It does not establish that every standard professional subscription worldwide includes Expert AI.

Some older help text gives a narrower answer. An availability support article dated 26 November 2025 describes US personal access through Pro Plus or trainee plans and a limited enterprise rollout. That is useful launch history, but it cannot settle today’s US standard-plan inclusion.

Canadian product pages still describe Pro Plus featuring Expert AI, while the trainee page explicitly includes US and Canadian trainees. Treat each statement as applying to the account type and country it names. Before choosing a plan, select your actual location and role in the store and read the included features shown for that offer.

Institutional subscriptions are a separate route. The current Expert AI page describes access through participating institutions in select markets. An organisation’s UpToDate subscription alone does not establish which AI features have been enabled for its users.

What Pro Plus adds beyond the AI answer

The current renewal page lists four additions to the standard solution:

  • State-tagged CME topics for physicians: identify content relevant to the requirements of a licensed US state.
  • Kidney Dosing Tool: provides a dedicated route to renal dosing guidance.
  • Rx Transitions for Mental Health: supports antidepressant switching.
  • MobileComplete: downloads UpToDate content to a mobile device for offline reading.

The Pro Plus product page describes the package as available to professional subscribers in the United States and Canada. These additions make the upgrade decision more specific than simply wanting AI.

For example, a clinician who frequently works with unreliable connectivity may value downloaded topics. Someone who regularly needs antidepressant switching support may value the dedicated tool. A user whose existing plan already supplies Expert AI should compare those extras with their own work before upgrading.

A generated answer mentioning renal dosing and access to a dedicated Kidney Dosing Tool are separate features. Likewise, ordinary CME accrual and state-tagged CME topics serve related but distinct purposes. Match the feature name to the task you intend to complete.

Lexidrug access needs its own line in the comparison

UpToDate includes selected medication monographs, calculators and a drug-interactions tool. Wolters Kluwer’s professional page directs users seeking more comprehensive drug information and additional tools to a full UpToDate Lexidrug subscription.

Expert AI also documents drug links and dosing insights grounded in UpToDate and Lexidrug content. That describes the information available within the AI experience; it does not by itself establish access to every product in the Lexidrug range.

A current bundle is worth checking: ACAAI’s 2 November member announcement describes UpToDate Pro Premium, combining UpToDate, Expert AI, MobileComplete and the Lexidrug Premium package for clinicians. Check the selected store offer for your role and location.

When comparing offers, record three separate things: the drug content included in the clinical reference, the medication information surfaced by Expert AI, and any full Lexidrug subscription or bundle. This is particularly useful for pharmacists and clinicians whose work involves detailed product information. A familiar drug-reference name appearing in an AI answer is insufficient to identify the entire subscription entitlement.

Offline topics and offline AI are different benefits

MobileComplete stores reference content on a device. Expert AI requires an internet connection, as the trainee access page makes explicit. An offline-content upgrade therefore does not create an offline conversational assistant. Our Expert AI mobile guide explains the app and login routes.

The same page states that trainee-rate subscriptions do not earn CME/CE/CPD credits. A trainee can have access to the AI experience without the credit entitlement offered through professional subscriptions. App availability, content access, AI access and education credits should each have a separate entry in a comparison.

Where iatroX makes the choice more useful for UK learning

For UK clinicians, the next question is often what happens after finding the recommendation. iatroX’s UK clinical library offers concise, source-linked NICE guidance, while Ask iatroX supports referenced clinical and educational questions. That provides an attractive starting point when UK guidance is central to the task.

The wider advantage is the connected learning route. Choose a relevant exam pathway, attempt a question, and use Tutor to examine the reasoning behind your answer. A learner can explore the distinction they missed, request a direct explanation, and keep an editable basic or cloze card for Anki. The attempted question remains the starting point for the discussion.

One iatroX subscription, at £29/month or £99/year in the UK; US$29/month or US$99/year elsewhere, includes every paid question bank, mocks, Tutor, study planning, available clinical simulation libraries and CPD learning. Simulations support voice or text where available, followed by a transcript, evidence-linked feedback and Tutor follow-up. This gives a learner a clear route from identifying uncertainty to practising its application.

Up to 10 new sample questions per day, shared across exams and subject to availability, with explanations and no account required.

One complete guided Tutor session is included with a verified free account; continued Tutor use is included in all-access.

Choose according to the work you want to finish: a detailed topic review, a source-linked answer, a dedicated prescribing task or deliberate practice. iatroX is especially compelling when the reference question is also a learning need you want to work through.

Frequently asked questions

Are UpToDate and UpToDate Expert AI separate references?

Expert AI is a conversational experience grounded in UpToDate content. The underlying reference remains useful when you want to read the broader topic.

Is Expert AI included with standard UpToDate?

The current official store and renewal pages say it is included in US personal subscriptions. Other countries, account types and institutional arrangements require their own entitlement check.

Is Pro Plus the same as a full Lexidrug subscription?

Do not infer that from the package name. Check the actual drug-reference entitlement, including any separately offered subscription or bundle.

Can I use Expert AI offline?

Expert AI needs internet access. MobileComplete provides downloaded UpToDate reference content for offline reading.

Can a trainee earn CME through Expert AI?

Trainee-rate subscriptions do not include CME/CE/CPD credit, even where Expert AI is included.
