UpToDate Expert AI on Mobile: Which App, Which Login and What Works Offline?

Featured image for UpToDate Expert AI on Mobile: Which App, Which Login and What Works Offline?

UpToDate Expert AI can be used on a phone, but an installed app is only the starting point. The useful questions are whether your account includes Expert AI, which mobile route your subscription supports, and whether you have separately downloaded reference content for a place with poor signal.

The clearest distinction is connectivity: Expert AI requires internet access. MobileComplete downloads UpToDate content for offline reading; it does not turn the AI into an offline assistant. Wolters Kluwer states this explicitly.

This guide is published by iatroX, which offers its own connected reference and learning service. Product documentation and access information were checked on 5 November 2026. The account-specific steps below come from official guidance rather than a logged-in product test.

Which UpToDate app should you use?

There are two apps with different starting points, alongside mobile web access.

RouteMain purposeWhat to establish first
UpToDate mobile appSearch and read clinical topics; access Expert AI where enabledYour account's AI and MobileComplete entitlements
UpToDate Expert AI appA dedicated conversational interface to UpToDate contentAn Expert AI-enabled subscription and supported access route
Mobile browserOpen UpToDate without installing an appA working login and internet connection

The official mobile guide directs enterprise users to the dedicated Expert AI app and individual subscribers to Expert AI through the regular UpToDate app. However, the current developer descriptions on the Apple App Store and Google Play also describe personal subscription access to the dedicated app.

That makes an absolute rule such as “the Expert AI app is enterprise-only” unhelpful. Follow the instructions for your own account and institution. If you already have access, establish the supported login route before starting another subscription through an app store.

Check compatibility for the particular app you intend to install. For example, the dedicated Expert AI app's US Apple listing currently requires iOS or iPadOS 26.0 or later. Requirements for the regular app should not be assumed to apply to the separate AI app.

Personal access: Expert AI and Pro Plus are separate checks

Personal subscription guidance has changed during the rollout. The current UpToDate renewal page says Expert AI is included in personal professional subscriptions in the United States, and in personal trainee subscriptions in the United States and Canada. It lists MobileComplete among the additional features included in Pro Plus.

Consequently, a professional should not assume that upgrading to Pro Plus is always necessary simply to obtain AI. The subscription package may matter more if the requirement is downloaded reference content.

Wolters Kluwer's Pro Plus page identifies professional-package availability in the United States and Canada. Its broader Expert AI guidance says access and features vary by market and subscription.

For a doctor in the UK or another market, the practical starting point is the actual offer or institutional entitlement available to that account. A subscription described on a US page does not establish eligibility elsewhere. A free app download also does not establish free ongoing access to Expert AI.

Hospital access: register the person, then verify the affiliation

Access on a hospital computer does not necessarily mean the phone is ready. Start through your organization's supported UpToDate route and establish the personal account attached to that entitlement.

The UpToDate User Academy describes registration through an organizational network, portal or single sign-on route. Existing users can sign in or merge accounts to preserve their CME records. The regular mobile app then uses existing UpToDate credentials; its initial startup can take a few minutes.

Ask the library or administrator two specific questions: does our subscription enable Expert AI, and does it include MobileComplete? These answer different needs. Confirming general UpToDate access answers neither automatically.

Wolters Kluwer's standard affiliation guidance requires institutional users to re-verify every 90 days. Access through the organization's portal can verify affiliation automatically; another route is signing into UpToDate from a computer on its network. Follow your organization's instructions where its setup differs.

When remote access lapses, check affiliation verification before treating the problem as an app fault. Reinstalling an app cannot renew an institutional entitlement.

Set up MobileComplete before losing the connection

MobileComplete is the relevant feature when the task is to read UpToDate topics without signal. Check that it is included or available for your subscription before planning around it.

The official setup instructions describe this sequence in the regular UpToDate app:

  1. Open the menu in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Offline Content – Set Up.
  3. Choose the content to download.
  4. Wait for the check mark confirming completion.

The published download requirements specify Wi-Fi for the initial download and full content updates. They list at least 400 MB for topics only or 1.3 GB for topics and graphics.

Allow time and storage before a shift or journey. A bookmark, a recently viewed topic and an installed app are not evidence that the offline library has finished downloading. Reconnect regularly for available updates rather than treating an old download as a permanently current reference.

A useful personal check is to switch the phone briefly into airplane mode and open a topic you expect to need, then restore connectivity. This is a suggested preparation step, not a claim that we tested a particular account or app version.

During a loss of signal, use the downloaded topic workflow. Once connected, return to conversational questions and source links. A completed download solves the reading problem; the AI still requires the connection.

Make the phone ready for the next shift

Run a short check in the place where you expect to use the service. A login that works on hospital Wi-Fi may leave an unresolved remote-access problem when you leave the building.

Open the intended app on mobile data, confirm the account, and check that the AI interface is available. Separately confirm the offline download. If one fails, record which part failed: signing in, opening topics, opening Expert AI or downloading content. That gives support a useful problem to investigate.

For connected AI use, keep the clinical question focused enough to type or dictate clearly. The official welcome guide describes relevant context, follow-up questions and links from generated answers to the underlying topics. Opening the cited section can be more useful than expanding a conversation indefinitely on a small screen.

Use a phone-sized learning opportunity with iatroX

A question found between patients can also become a focused learning session. On your phone, iatroX connects reference questions with exam preparation, Tutor, revision cards, Anki export and available simulations under one plan.

For example, after resolving a topic, identify the distinction you want to remember. Try an available exam question independently, discuss the reasoning with Tutor, and create a compact revision card for the point that remains difficult. Where the skill involves organising or communicating an approach, choose a relevant available simulation. Anki export gives you another route for revisiting cards later.

The iatroX plan costs £29/month or £99/year in the UK; US$29/month or US$99/year elsewhere. This connects mobile reference with a focused learning activity when you have internet access.

Up to 10 new sample questions per day, shared across exams and subject to availability, with explanations and no account required.

One complete guided Tutor session is included with a verified free account; continued Tutor use is included in all-access.

Frequently asked questions

Does UpToDate Expert AI work offline?

No. MobileComplete supports downloaded UpToDate content, while Expert AI requires internet access.

Do I need both mobile apps?

Choose the route supported by your account. The dedicated app focuses on AI conversation; the regular app provides the topic-reading route and MobileComplete setup where included.

Why can I read topics but not open Expert AI?

Check AI entitlement, market availability and connectivity separately from topic access. For an institutional account, also check that affiliation verification is current. The most useful setup is one in which you have confirmed AI access and downloaded reading independently.
