RCPCH Learning for MRCPCH: What to Use for FOP, TAS and AKP

RCPCH Learning is a useful starting point when you need teaching rather than another undifferentiated set of questions. The important distinction is between its wider paediatric learning catalogue and its specifically labelled examination-preparation products. Choose a resource for the paper and task you are preparing, not simply because it carries the College's name.

The examination-preparation page, checked on 19 September 2026, lists dedicated FOP, AKP and MRCPCH Clinical offerings. It does not list a parallel dedicated TAS package on that page. That does not mean the wider College resources cannot support TAS learning; it means candidates should not infer a product that has not been identified.

This guide is published by iatroX and includes its paper-specific questions as complementary options. The examples below are original teaching exercises, not College questions or a claim that College resources endorse iatroX.

Separate the paper before selecting the module

Foundation of Practice, Theory and Science and Applied Knowledge in Practice are different preparation targets. Use the RCPCH examination resources to check the current requirements, then define what you need from the teaching: foundational understanding, scientific explanation or application to a clinical problem.

A module can be useful across those tasks without serving them identically. A clear explanation of a mechanism may help with scientific reasoning, while an examination workshop may be more useful for understanding how a particular paper frames its questions. Do not assume that completing the same playlist is an efficient plan for all three.

Write the paper name at the top of your resource list. Beside each entry, add the learning problem it addresses. If you cannot complete that second column, the resource may belong in optional reading rather than the current revision plan.

What the dedicated products publicly describe

As published on 19 September 2026, the FOP and AKP online preparation offerings each list example questions and recorded teaching, with access advertised at £50 for 90 days. The FOP description includes guidance and professional topics; the AKP description identifies several applied clinical areas. The separate Clinical offering has a different purpose and price.

These are dated access terms, not a recommendation to purchase every package. A focused College course can be a better fit than a broader subscription when the candidate needs exactly that teaching. Conversely, a limited preparation course is not automatically a complete daily question bank or a replacement for all foundational study.

Check login requirements and the actual package before payment. An account on RCPCH Learning does not establish that every item in the catalogue is included without a further charge.

One topic, three different pieces of work

Consider an original fictional family-history case. A child is being investigated for a possible inherited condition. The account contains a developmental history, a family pedigree and an explanation of a proposed genetic mechanism. The purpose here is to select learning tasks, not to diagnose a real child.

For a foundational clinical task, identify what the history actually establishes and what is missing. Are the reported concerns new, longstanding or described differently by different observers? Which information would help you represent the problem accurately before choosing a diagnosis?

For a science-focused task, set the clinical narrative aside and explain the proposed mechanism. State the assumptions required for the inheritance pattern being discussed. If those assumptions are not supplied, identify the uncertainty rather than treating a familiar pedigree shape as proof.

For an applied task, introduce a new result that does not fully explain the child's presentation. Ask whether the result answers the original clinical question, which findings remain unexplained and what needs clarification. This is different from recalling a definition or naming a pattern.

The same topic can therefore generate three useful activities without pretending that the papers are interchangeable. The examination-specific syllabus determines the required breadth and depth; the case helps you see which kind of explanation is missing.

Choose the format that repairs the gap

A short module may be enough when you cannot recall a concept. A worked lecture may be more useful when you need someone to explain how a decision is reached. A question set can test whether that understanding transfers to a different presentation.

Before viewing, write one question for the material to answer. After viewing, explain the answer without the recording. Then identify an application you have not already seen. This does not require converting every lecture into a deck of cards or rewriting its slides.

If the explanation remains unclear, return to the relevant section or seek a teacher. Repeating a mock examination is not the most direct repair for a concept you still cannot explain. Equally, a learner who understands the concept but repeatedly misreads the task may not need another complete lecture.

Keep DCH and clinical preparation visible but separate

The College's FOP preparation page explicitly mentions MRCPCH/DCH FOP. A reader preparing for DCH should check that qualification's current requirements rather than assume an MRCPCH learning route covers every component.

The same caution applies to MRCPCH Clinical. Watching demonstrations can help you understand a task, but it cannot establish that you can examine a child, interact appropriately in practice or elicit a physical sign. Those capabilities need suitable real-world teaching and observation.

According to iatroX's September 2026 product information, its catalogue includes relevant paediatric written pathways and DCH knowledge practice. This article does not claim a dedicated iatroX MRCPCH Clinical or DCH clinical simulation track. Choose only the product scope actually published.

A paper-specific resource decision

Use this compact inventory before adding another resource:

Your difficultyResource to look forWhat to produce afterwards
A foundational concept is unclearTeaching at the appropriate introductory levelA short explanation without the source
A mechanism cannot be justifiedScience-focused material relevant to TASA prediction when one condition changes
A clinical result is hard to applyWorked interpretation and AKP-relevant practiceA reasoned decision with remaining uncertainty
The assessment task is unfamiliarOfficial paper-specific preparationA clear account of the task and its limits

The table is a suggested allocation method, not a mapping endorsed by the College. Keep any uncertain syllabus connection visible until you check it.

Where iatroX fits after the teaching

The September 2026 iatroX proposition includes separate FOP, TAS and AKP questions, adaptive sequencing, spaced repetition and question-linked Tutor discussion. Use the relevant paper to test the learning problem you selected, not merely to accumulate a larger combined question count.

For a learner who already has useful College teaching, independent practice may be the missing component. For someone who cannot explain the underlying science, another bank may be premature. The purchasing decision should follow the gap, with the College's resources and existing entitlements assessed before adding a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does the RCPCH preparation page list a dedicated TAS package?

The page checked on 19 September 2026 lists FOP, AKP and Clinical offerings, not a parallel TAS package. Check the wider catalogue and current examination resources for relevant scientific teaching.

Is RCPCH Learning entirely free with an account?

Do not assume that: the dedicated exam-preparation page includes paid products with stated access periods. Check the particular resource and any membership entitlement before purchasing.

Can a question bank replace paediatric bedside teaching?

No: questions can support knowledge and reasoning, but they do not demonstrate physical examination or observed clinical performance. Keep practical preparation separate from written learning.
