What member questions can tell you
The AAFP's published member questions offer an opportunity to inspect your response to board-style material without first buying another bank. They can help you discover whether an apparently familiar topic becomes difficult when presented as a decision.
A sample is less suited to judging total curriculum coverage or predicting performance on the certification examination. Do not rank providers by a handful of unmatched questions. One sample may happen to concern your strongest area, another your weakest, and both may have been selected for demonstration rather than measurement.
For each attempted question, record whether the explanation resolves your uncertainty. Can you explain the deciding detail? Can you distinguish the closest alternative? Is your next learning task obvious? Those observations concern usefulness to you, rather than an unsupported claim about overall provider quality.
A fictional audit before checkout
Consider a family-medicine resident, Evan, who has worked mostly in acute adult care during recent rotations. He has AAFP member access but has completed only questions related to his current work. His conclusion is that he needs a larger bank.
The first check reveals a different problem: he has not tested areas outside that recent clinical exposure. He schedules a deliberately mixed set, records the topics that require explanation and compares them with the examination's current content outline. No new subscription is required to discover this initial gap.
A second check exposes a genuine need. On one topic, he can recall facts but cannot understand why the question prioritises one action. The existing explanation is accurate but does not resolve his particular misconception. He now has a clear reason to evaluate additional teaching or interactive clarification.
A third need is logistical. Evan wants someone to structure the week and explain unfamiliar material live. A self-directed bank may not provide that. The AAFP's separate teaching options deserve consideration on their actual merits, not dismissal because a question-only subscription has a lower headline price.
Put the resource into a real week
Allocate the first session to finding a gap, the second to understanding it and the third to applying the correction. These are suggested tasks, not a prescribed number of study hours. Use the time you actually have rather than copying someone else's calendar.
For the first session, select questions outside the week's familiar clinical work. For the second, choose the shortest suitable source or teaching activity that resolves the difficulty. For the third, attempt unfamiliar material without the explanation visible and record what changed.
Keep a separate appointment with the exam blueprint. Need-led study is useful, but an untested topic cannot announce itself through your error log. Review both the errors you have seen and the areas you have not yet sampled adequately.
What would another subscription have to add?
