The Portfolio Pathway (CESR)

The senior route to UK Specialist/GP Registration outside a UK training programme: curriculum-mapped evidence, assessor logic, and how to build an 800–1000 page portfolio that lands.

Key points

  • “CESR/CEGPR” is now framed as the “Portfolio Pathway” — it’s still evidence-based equivalence to the UK CCT curriculum, assessed against specialty guidance.
  • Expect a large, structured bundle: 800–1000 pages of mapped evidence is common; organisation and indexing often matter as much as raw volume.
  • The winning move is an evidence factory: a single master index, tight mapping to Specialty Specific Guidance (SSG), and relentless “missing-evidence” closure.

What it actually is (in one line)

You are proving — on documents alone — that you already function at the level of a UK-trained specialist/GP, by mapping your entire practice to the CCT curriculum using the GMC’s Specialty Specific Guidance (SSG).

Build the portfolio like a senior consultant would run a service

1

Pick the right curriculum + SSG first (not last)

Before collecting evidence, lock the exact UK curriculum version and download your Specialty Specific Guidance (SSG). Your entire structure (folders, filenames, headings) should mirror that document. If it’s not in the SSG, it’s “nice” but not “necessary.”
2

Create a master index (your “Table of Contents”)

One spreadsheet/Doc that lists each curriculum domain → the exact evidence items you’ll use → date → location → supervisor/consultant verifier → file name. This becomes your single source of truth and prevents duplication and gaps.
3

Run the “Evidence Triad” for every domain

For each competency: (1) direct clinical evidence (logbooks, clinic lists, on-calls, case-based discussions), (2) supervised assessments / MSF / feedback, (3) governance (audit/QIP, guideline work, incident learning). Most rejections happen where one leg of the triad is missing.
4

Build verification into your workflow

Do not “collect then validate.” Validate as you go: each document is anonymised (where needed), clearly titled, and verified/signed/stamped according to local expectations before it enters the final bundle.
5

Do a pre-submission “Red Team” review

Ask a UK consultant/ES to review your index like an assessor: “If I only saw what’s here, would I be convinced?” Your goal is not volume — it’s an assessor-proof narrative that closes obvious objections.

The most expensive mistake: “uncurated dumping”

Uploading too much irrelevant evidence can be as damaging as uploading too little. Your evidence should read like a structured argument: each item exists to prove a specific curriculum requirement — nothing more.
