The Bottom Line
- AHPRA registration is the operational gateway — you cannot work in Australia without it, regardless of your pathway.
- The Standard Pathway requires: AMC CAT MCQ → AMC Clinical Exam (or WBA) → Provisional Registration → Supervised Practice → General Registration.
- English language requirements and primary source verification are the most common delay points.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the national registration body. The Medical Board of Australia sets the standards; AHPRA processes the applications. For Standard Pathway IMGs, registration is a multi-stage process that begins with passing AMC assessments and ends with general registration after supervised practice. The timeline from first exam to independent practice is typically 2–4 years depending on exam scheduling, job availability, and administrative processing.
1
Step 1 — Verify your eligibility for the Standard Pathway
The Standard Pathway is for IMGs whose qualifications and training do not qualify them for the Competent Authority or Specialist Pathway. You must hold a primary medical qualification listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and meet English language requirements. Check the Medical Board of Australia website for current eligibility criteria.
2
Step 2 — Meet English language requirements
AHPRA accepts OET (minimum B in each component, or combination of results within specified windows) or IELTS Academic (minimum 7.0 in each band, or combination within specified windows). The rules on combining results across sittings have specific conditions — check the current Registration Standard for English language skills. Start this early; rebooking and re-sitting can add months.
3
Step 3 — Pass AMC CAT MCQ (Part 1)
150 MCQs in a single sitting. Computer-adaptive format. Focus your preparation on a tight resource stack: timed Q-bank execution, Murtagh's General Practice, and systematic error correction. Book the exam early as sittings can fill.
4
Step 4 — Pass AMC Clinical Exam or complete WBA
After passing the MCQ, you take the AMC Clinical Exam (OSCE-style, 16 stations) OR complete Workplace Based Assessment (WBA) in an approved position. WBA requires an appointed hospital/GP role with structured supervision — not all positions qualify. Choose based on your circumstances: Clinical Exam if you want to control the timeline, WBA if you already have a qualifying position.
5
Step 5 — Apply for Provisional Registration with AHPRA
After passing both AMC assessments, apply for provisional registration. This requires: primary source verification (through MyIntealth/EPIC), Certificate of Good Standing, English language evidence, identity documents, and the application fee. Processing times vary — apply as soon as you are eligible, not when you have a job offer.
6
Step 6 — Complete supervised practice (typically 12 months)
Provisional registration allows you to work under supervision in an approved position. The supervised practice period is typically 12 months. Your supervisor provides reports to the Medical Board. Satisfactory completion leads to general registration — which is your independent practice licence.
The PSV bottleneck
Primary source verification (PSV) through MyIntealth can take months depending on your medical school's response time. Start the PSV process at the same time as your exam preparation — not after you pass. This single step is the most common cause of unexpected delays.
