Why should systemic corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants be avoided before starting nivolumab?

Systemic corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants should be avoided before starting nivolumab because they may interfere with its pharmacodynamic activity; however, they can be used afterward for immune-related adverse reactions, and preliminary results suggest that immunosuppression after treatment starts does not preclude a nivolumab response.
