Why is Aqueous Iodine Oral Solution BP used before subtotal thyroidectomy?

Aqueous Iodine Oral Solution BP is added after an antithyroid agent has rendered the patient euthyroid to firm the thyroid and avoid the increased vascularity, friability and haemorrhage risk that may result from using an antithyroid agent alone.
