Dexrazoxane chelates iron, especially through its ring-opened metabolite, reducing iron-dependent oxidative stress causing anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity, and inhibits topoisomerase II; each mechanism’s contribution to preventing tissue destruction after anthracycline extravasation is unknown.
