Seek urgent medical assessment if your baby develops any of these signs of dehydration or deterioration:

  • Fewer wet nappies than usual, indicating reduced urine output .
  • Unusual irritability, lethargy or reduced responsiveness, or appearing increasingly unwell .
  • Sunken eyes or a dry mouth .
  • Faster breathing or a racing heartbeat, or skin that has lost its normal elasticity .

Call 999 for emergency help if she becomes difficult to rouse or less conscious, or develops pale/mottled skin with cold hands or feet: these are signs of possible shock .

Keep a low threshold for reassessment: children under 1 year and children who have vomited three or more times in 24 hours are at increased risk of dehydration .
