Consider referring a patient with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) to a mental health specialist when:

  • There is significant distress or functional impairment that cannot be managed effectively in primary care.
  • The patient exhibits comorbid conditions such as depression, anxiety, or other mental health disorders that complicate management.
  • Standard treatments and coping strategies in primary care have not led to improvement.
  • The patient requests specialist input or further help beyond primary care capabilities.
  • There is diagnostic uncertainty or the need for specialist assessment to differentiate OCPD from other disorders such as OCD or borderline personality disorder.

Referral to specialist multidisciplinary teams with expertise in personality disorders is recommended to provide comprehensive assessment, psychological treatment, and support tailored to the patient’s needs.
