Serum ferritin and transferrin saturation levels should be monitored every 1 to 3 months in patients at risk of iron overload to routinely assess iron stores and prevent excess iron accumulation. In people undergoing haemodialysis, monitoring is typically done every 1 to 3 months, while in pre-dialysis or peritoneal dialysis patients, monitoring is usually every 3 months. If the serum ferritin level reaches 500 micrograms/litre, the iron dose should be reviewed to prevent levels rising above 800 micrograms/litre. Monitoring should be more frequent if intravenous iron therapy is being administered or adjusted.
