Referral criteria for colposcopy in patients with abnormal cervical screening results:

  • Women with cervical screening results showing high-grade abnormalities (such as moderate or severe dyskaryosis) should be referred for colposcopy.
  • Referral is also indicated if the cervical appearance on examination is consistent with cervical cancer.
  • Persistent low-grade abnormalities may require repeat cytology and possible referral depending on persistence and clinical judgement.
  • Referral should be made through the appropriate gynaecological cancer pathway if there is suspicion of cervical cancer based on symptoms or examination findings.

These criteria align with NICE guidance on suspected cancer recognition and referral pathways, which recommend urgent referral for suspected cervical cancer and colposcopy assessment for abnormal cervical screening results indicating potential pre-cancerous or cancerous changes .
