Consider referring a patient with a urethral stricture to a urologist if they have bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) that have not responded to conservative management or drug treatment. Also refer if the LUTS are complicated by recurrent or persistent urinary tract infection, urinary retention, renal impairment suspected to be caused by lower urinary tract dysfunction, or suspected urological cancer. Specialist assessment is appropriate to evaluate the severity and complications of the stricture and to discuss potential surgical or other specialist interventions.
