For a patient with alcohol use disorder seeking help for the first time, conduct a brief triage assessment to evaluate the pattern and severity of alcohol misuse, the need for urgent treatment including assisted withdrawal, and any associated risks to self or others, using tools such as AUDIT and SADQ .

Offer a motivational intervention based on motivational interviewing principles to help the patient recognize problems, resolve ambivalence, and encourage positive change .

Discuss treatment goals with the patient, with abstinence being the typical goal for most with dependence, but also considering moderation if appropriate and supported by the patient’s social context .

Develop an initial treatment plan that may include psychosocial support, education, and possibly pharmacological interventions, delivered by trained staff, tailored to the patient's needs and preferences .
