The recommended first-line treatment options for adults with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma include bortezomib in combination with dexamethasone, or with dexamethasone and thalidomide, for those eligible for high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell transplantation .

For patients in whom high-dose chemotherapy is considered inappropriate, thalidomide in combination with an alkylating agent and a corticosteroid is recommended as an option .
