The most effective topical treatment for managing stage 2 pressure ulcers in primary care is the use of appropriate wound dressings that promote a warm, moist wound-healing environment. Such dressings should be selected based on the person's pain and tolerance, the ulcer's position, the amount of exudate, and the frequency of dressing changes.

Topical antiseptics or antimicrobials should not be routinely used to treat pressure ulcers, including stage 2 ulcers.

Gauze dressings are not recommended for treating pressure ulcers.

Autolytic debridement supported by appropriate dressings may be considered if debridement is needed, but enzymatic or larval debridement is not routinely offered.

Systemic antibiotics should only be used if there is clinical evidence of infection such as spreading cellulitis or systemic sepsis, not solely to promote ulcer healing.
