Conduct an eye examination and measure visual acuity to confirm the diagnosis and exclude other causes of visual impairment, using a Snellen chart or recent optometrist's eyesight test, and include this information in the referral .

Assess the impact of the cataract on the patient's vision and quality of life through a discussion with the patient (and their family or carers, as appropriate) .

Determine whether one or both eyes are affected and discuss the patient's preferences and concerns regarding surgery .

Provide advice on fitness to drive, including whether the patient meets the minimum visual standards for driving, and inform them about the need to notify the DVLA if standards are not met .

Evaluate the patient's capacity to cooperate with examinations, surgery, and postoperative care, especially in cases of systemic comorbidities, disabilities, or reduced mental capacity .

Ensure assessment of any ocular comorbidities that may influence surgical planning or outcomes .
