During routine check-ups for individuals with Down's syndrome, several common comorbidities should be considered.

  • A person with Down's syndrome is at increased risk of early-onset dementia .
  • They are also at increased risk of hypothyroidism .
  • Premature menopause is another increased risk for individuals with Down's syndrome .

Specifically, during annual health checks with adults who have Down's syndrome, it is important to ask them and their family members, carers, or care workers about any changes that might suggest the need for a dementia assessment . These changes could include any alteration in the person's behaviour, any loss of skills (including self-care), or a need for more prompting in recent months .
