For patients who have undergone cholecystectomy for cholecystitis, post-operative care and follow-up should include several key aspects.

Immediate Post-operative Care:

  • Postoperative care should be provided in a specialist recovery area, such as a high-dependency unit, post-anaesthesia care unit, or intensive care unit, for individuals at a high risk of complications or mortality .
  • A multimodal approach, combining analgesics from different classes, should be offered to manage postoperative pain .
  • Consider prescribing pre-emptive analgesia for use when local anaesthesia wears off .

Patient Advice and Follow-up:

  • Patients should be advised that they do not need to avoid food and drink that previously triggered their symptoms after their gallbladder has been removed ,.
  • They should also be advised to seek further advice from their GP if eating or drinking triggers existing symptoms or causes new symptoms to develop once they have recovered from the surgery ,.
