When is it appropriate to refer a patient with ME/CFS to a specialist for further evaluation or management?

Refer a patient with suspected or confirmed ME/CFS to an appropriate specialist or specialist team if there is uncertainty about interpreting signs and symptoms at 3 months of persistent symptoms, or if further assessment is needed to confirm diagnosis and develop a care plan .

Adults should be referred directly to an ME/CFS specialist team to confirm their diagnosis and develop a care and support plan .

Children and young people diagnosed with ME/CFS after assessment by a paediatrician should be referred directly to a paediatric ME/CFS specialist team for further assessment and management .

Referral is also appropriate if there are new or deteriorating aspects of the condition, or if symptoms significantly impact daily activities, mental health, or require specialist intervention .
