Symptomatic drowning with cough, oxygen requirement or abnormal respiratory examination requires observation and supportive oxygen. Prophylactic antibiotics and steroids are not routine after drowning without evidence of infection. The pearl is that children who are asymptomatic after an observation period may be discharged, but persistent symptoms require ongoing care.
