Mild hypothermia in an alert patient is managed with removal of wet clothing, insulation, gentle handling and warm drinks if safe. Vigorous rubbing, exertion and alcohol are inappropriate and may worsen heat loss or cause injury. Hot bath immersion is difficult to control and can cause peripheral vasodilation. The pearl is that shivering means the patient can still generate heat if protected from further loss.
