PID is a clinical diagnosis and treatment should start empirically when pelvic tenderness and cervicitis are present, with STI testing and partner notification. Waiting for swab results can increase risk of complications. Clotrimazole treats candidiasis, not upper genital tract infection. A negative pregnancy test helps exclude ectopic pregnancy but does not exclude PID.
