In severe hypoglycaemia with unconsciousness and no IV access, IM glucagon is the treatment of choice. The dose is 0.5 mg for children <8 years or <25 kg, and 1 mg for children ≥8 years or ≥25 kg. Oral glucose is contraindicated in an unconscious child due to aspiration risk. Once IV access is obtained, IV 10% dextrose (2–5 mL/kg) should be given.
