Pit and fissure sealants function primarily as a physical barrier, filling the deep morphological features of pits and fissures with resin or glass ionomer material. This eliminates the stagnation site where bacteria colonise and acid is produced. Even bacteria sealed beneath intact sealant become non-viable due to lack of nutrient access. Sealant retention is the key determinant of effectiveness — completely retained sealants provide near-complete caries protection. GIC sealants additionally release fluoride but their primary mechanism is still the physical barrier.
