Cementoblasts are specialised cells responsible for the formation and deposition of cementum on the root surface. They differentiate from ectomesenchymal cells of the dental follicle following the disintegration of Hertwig epithelial root sheath (HERS). Cementoblasts produce the organic matrix of cementum (primarily type I collagen) which subsequently mineralises. Two types of cementum are formed: acellular extrinsic fibre cementum (AEFC — contains Sharpey fibres from the PDL; critical for tooth attachment) and cellular intrinsic fibre cementum (CIFC — contains cementocytes; found on the apical root and in repair).
