The mandibular foramen is located on the medial surface of the mandibular ramus, approximately at its centre (slightly posterior to the midpoint anteroposteriorly, slightly above the midpoint superoinferiorly). In adults, it is generally located at or slightly above the level of the occlusal plane of the mandibular teeth. The lingula (a bony projection) overhangs the foramen anteriorly. The pterygomandibular raphe and the coronoid notch are used as clinical landmarks for locating the injection site for the IAN block, which targets the nerve just before it enters the foramen.
