Glass ionomer cement bonds chemically to tooth structure through ionic (chemical) bonding between the carboxyl groups of the polyalkenoic acid (polyacrylic acid) and calcium ions in the hydroxyapatite of enamel and dentin. Zinc polycarboxylate cement also bonds chemically through a similar mechanism (carboxyl groups chelating with calcium), but GIC generally achieves a stronger chemical bond. Zinc phosphate cement and ZOE cement do NOT bond chemically to tooth structure — they rely on mechanical retention and friction.
