Concrescence is the union of two adjacent teeth by cementum only (no dentin involvement). It can be developmental or acquired (post-inflammatory hypercementosis). It most commonly occurs in the maxillary molar region. The clinical significance is that extraction of one concrescent tooth may inadvertently extract the fused adjacent tooth. Pre-operative radiographic assessment is essential. Fusion involves union of dentin; gemination involves incomplete splitting of a single germ.
