It allows detection of subtle cortical erosions, osteophytes, flattening, sclerosis, and subcortical cysts that may not be visible on conventional radiographs. CBCT is the imaging modality of choice for osseous TMJ assessment. MRI remains the gold standard for soft tissue (disc) evaluation.
