CBCT provides superior three-dimensional visualisation of the bony components of the TMJ (condyle, articular eminence, glenoid fossa) compared to conventional radiographic projections. It allows detection of subtle cortical erosions, osteophytes, flattening, sclerosis, and subcortical cysts that may not be visible on conventional radiographs. CBCT is the imaging modality of choice for osseous TMJ assessment. MRI remains the gold standard for soft tissue (disc) evaluation.
